Description
An account of the resource
A black funeral card with white lettering and line art. The art covers the page, along with a verse, and is of blooming flowers and vines, a hay bundle with a scythe, and an open book with the words "Holy Bible in loving remembrance of" written on the pages.
The card memorializes the death of Joseph Kimbal Hemphill, who died on January 23, 1904.
The verse reads:
"'Tis hard to break the tender cord
When love has bound the heart.
'Tis hard, so hard, to speak the words,
Must we forever part?
Dearest loved one, we have laid thee
In the peaceful grave's embrace,
But thy memory will be cherished
'Till we see thy heavenly face."

Description
An account of the resource
A map of the city of Coralville, circa 1870 (Lovetinsky et al., p. 42). The lines drawn designate the property boundaries of acres of land belonging to different landowners at that time; their names are listed to indicate which acres they owned. The flouring mill, paper mill, and woolen mill are all marked by x's on the outer bend of the Iowa River. The rail line is also clearly marked going through the properties of Isaac Dennis, Gil Folsom, & S. Sharplens.
Those familiar with the history of Coralville may recognize some of the names of the property owners: Ezekiel Clark, Joseph Hemphill, Isaac Dennis, and Samuel J. Kirkwood, in particular.
The text at the bottom of the map states, "Coralville area-1870."

Description
An account of the resource
This printed article states the following:
"Mr. James got a splendid negative for a photograph of the ruins of the Coralville mill, taken early next day after the disaster, and now has the pictures ready for delivery.
The view is directly from the South, so that the observer, looking to the North has the entire hundred feet of leveled wall before him. There are tanks 1 and 2, lifted from their places with the man-holes blown open and to the right is No. 4, from under which Smally was taken. So every feature of the ruin is brought out vividly in this excellent and highly finished picture, a copy of which should hang in every house as a souvenir of our most dreadful casualty."
Walch states in his book that this article was taken from the Iowa City Press on July 30, 1875 (Walch, p. 32).

Description
An account of the resource
A ticket listing a single election choice to fill the political seats of the city of Coralville. Elections were held annually in March from 1874-1953; in 1954, elections were moved to November. (Lovetinsky et al., p. 86).
This ticket states the following:
"Coralville Ticket
For Mayor, T.R. Hackett.
For Recorder, J.A. Simmons.
For Treasurer, C.E. Robinson.
For Councilmen, B. Bowers, John Williams, F.W, Rabenau, P. McGahn, John Davis.
For Assessor, J.H. Clark.
For Street Commissioner, George Moore."
This ticket was most likely printed for the 1887 election and won, as the men listed filled those positions that year (the only exception being that Valentine Miller replaced John Williams as a Councilman). Thomas R. Hackett was also elected to serve as mayor for the years 1891 and 1892 (Lovetinsky et al., p. 82-83).

A ticket listing a single election choice to fill the political seats of the city of Coralville. Elections were held annually in March from 1874-1953; in 1954, elections were moved to November. (Lovetinsky et al., p. 86).

For Trustees, John H. Clark, John Williams, J.C. Wilson, Patrick McGahn, Chas. E. Robinson.
For Treasurer, Thomas R. Hackett
For Assessor, McDonald Stewart
For Street Commissioner, Thomas Curry."
It is unknown when this ticket was printed, but based on the names that appear, it can most likely be dated back to the 1870s-1890s. A.W. Davis is never listed in historical records as being the mayor of Coralville, so presumably this Bull-Dozer's ticket lost the election (Lovetinsky et al., p. 82-83).

The public library in Coralville, Iowa was established by the City Council on April 6, 1965 and first opened its doors to the public on September 12 of the same year. From that point on, the Coralville Public Library has been on a constant path of growth and change, much like the city of Coralville itself.

The Coralville Public Library Photograph Collection includes images of the different buildings, programs, events, and types of resources the library has used to serve the local community over the years. The collection also shows the library staff members, board members, community supporters and volunteers who made these resources and services possible.

Descriptions for each image were written by Rachel Black and Wendy Stevenson using information from the donors, past and current library staff members and volunteers, and the primary sources listed below. If users of this database have additional information about the images or notice discrepancies, they are encouraged to reach out to the Coralvillle Digital History Library.

A special thank you to Allison Ames Galstad, Ellen Hampe Alexander, and all of our donors.

Donations for this collection are on-going. If you have photographs and documents of the Coralville Public Library you would like included in this collection, please contact the Coralville Digital History Library.

coralvilledigitalhistory@coralville.org

Donate here

Description
An account of the resource
Some selections from a journal written and kept during the spring of 2020, when concerns about the spread of COVID-19 led to the shut down of many businesses and the mandate that all but essential workers remain at home.
Through these selections, the journal author navigates thoughts about the construct of a society reliant on wealth, as well as their own mental health during a time when quiet days and routines fail to mask underlying fears and emotional stress.

Description
An account of the resource
Capturing Local History is a collection images and documents that reflect Coralville through time. The collection draws upon items generated by the City of Coralville, as well as contributions from the public. The aim is to create an archive that reflects not only the physical and institutional changes our city has seen over the years, but capture the people and events that have shaped Coralville. The collection is ongoing with the hope it will grow to embody the diverse stories of our community to share with the future.

Share your story here.
