Vishalini was apprehensive to speak with me at first. As a relative newcomer to America much less Coralville, she expressed worry that she would not have much to add on an oral history about residents in Coralville. Instead of focusing heavily on Coralville, Iowa, or even America, we talked about her own life and how she eventually found her way to be here. Coralville is a town that is heavily influenced by the University of Iowa, and unsurprisingly, a lot of the population are students from around the world. Despite being here for only a short amount of time, they undoubtedly are a part of what makes Coralville, Coralville.

When I first approached Leah, I told her this was an interview about her affective experience living in Coralville. While this is always true for all my interviews, I also focus on the narrator’s life story outside of Coralville. As a city located in close proximity to the University of Iowa, Coralville’s residents often come from different places around the country and world. In that spirit, we also discussed her life experiences as a Korean adoptee in her home state in Kentucky, her time as a college student in Ohio, and how all these different elements of her life influence how she lives in Coralville today. After our interview, Leah told me she didn’t expect to talk about all these things in this interview, but she appreciated that she got the chance to connect all these elements of her life together in one interview.

In an interview scheduled to go from 9 AM to 11 AM, councilwoman Hai Huynh and I spoke for over five hours. Between laughter, tears, and reflection, Hai told me how her grandma taught her the meaning of community, how she struggled and succeeded navigating schools in America as a recent immigrant from Vietnam at 16, and how she came to become a city councilmember in the midst of COVID-19 and the racial reckoning in the summer of 2020.

Rehab's story was incredibly powerful. The first few moments of the interview she was admittedly nervous. However, after a few minutes, she settled into the interview and began telling amazing stories. The story that will stick with me the longest is her telling me about how she faced employment discrimination when she tried applying for a job at Wal-Mart. While they initially refused to hire her due to the Wal-Mart managers believing she would not be able to touch pork as the checkout counter as a Muslim woman, Rehab reassured them she could and would do that. She viewed this moment as her standing up for her rights as a person, a lesson she is conscious to teach her children as she navigates being a mother in a time of heightened islamophobia.

"As an adoptee, I feel like a lot of people will go through different periods of their life where they are very interested in their adoption, and then they're very like, "I don't want to ever think about this and think about why, and I don't want to think about any of the implications from it." And then you just go back and forth between those throughout your life." For Leah, some of these different periods came when she experienced bullying as a child, had to confront her own family about race, and dealt with the ramifications of heightened racism against Asians during COVID.

Description
An account of the resource
Coming from China to America as a dependent to her husband who was a PhD student at the University of Iowa, Qing Xu spoke little English. To learn she took English classes at the Coralville Public Library and Kirkwood Community College for a couple of years. Her English skills improved to the point where she is now a successful graduate student at the University of Iowa in both library science and music composition. When I asked Qing if Coralville felt like home to her, she told me stories of the friendships she has formed here. From friends helping her move, to friends bringing fruits and vegetables from their garden, she happily asked “If that’s not home, what’s home?” Qing’s story offers just one of the many ways international students that live in Coralville find and create homes for themselves in the Coralville community.

Celine's story most succinctly captured a theme I had noticed throughout many of my interviews. Celine told me how she grew up in North Liberty, she went to school in Iowa City, but she became an adult in Coralville. That element of becoming an adult in Coralville was repeated by a number of the narrators in this project.

Description
An account of the resource
In this vignette, I ask Qing about why and how she composed a piece about water. She tells me that the ocean was something she longed for as a kid. Armed with images of water from TV shows, movies, and books, she tried to compose a piece about the ocean she dreamed of. When I asked her if she had constructed an idea of America in a similar way, she tells me she had never thought of such a thing. Despite never really wanting to live in America, she still found a home in Coralville when life happened to bring her here.

My interview with Celine was filled with laughter but also quite a few somber moments. Between hearing she was named after Celine Dion and how she wants to make Coralville’s nickname “the ville,” she told me stories about being a care-taker for then partner’s mother when she had cancer and unlearning her own internalized prejudices. For her, Coralville is the place where she became an adult – both in the joys and the struggle, and her stories ultimately reflect that.

Description
An account of the resource
This was my second time interviewing Omega Dancel. The first was for another oral history project that aimed to capture the stories of Asian American students and alumni at the University of Iowa that you can find here. In that first interview with her, she told me about being a part of a theatre troupe in college that brought children stories from Asia to life for the residents of Coralville and Iowa City. It is amazing to see that thread continue in this oral history interview. As one of the four women that organized Coralville’s Asian Fest, Omega Dancel talks about how the rise of racism agaisnt Asians during the COVID-19 pandemic nationally inspired her and her friends to actualize their ten-year long vision of organizing a festival to celebrate Asian culture here in Coralville.
