Description
Edward Koser was elected as the eleventh Mayor of Coralville in 1902. He remained in office for thirty-three years, until his death in 1935. He opened Koser's Grocery Store in 1914.
Koser's time in office was marked by change, including the installation of electric lights in 1909, the laying of cement sidewalks in 1910,the annexation of Coralville Heights in 1923, the creation of the Volunteer Fire Department in 1929, and the granting of the gas franchise in 1934. Koser also achieved Iowa fame when he burned down the town jail in the winter of 1931 with the declaration, "There is no need for one for there is no crime in Coralville." (Lovetinsky et al., p. 77).
