A formal portrait of Russell D. Slade, a prominent city resident from the 1950s to the early 1980s.
Russell D. Slade was born December 26, 1934 in Iowa City. He graduated from University High School in 1952. Two years later, on June 28, 1954, he married Dolores May Kofron. They had three children: Cynthia Lynn, Thomas Russell, and Timothy Dean.
Slade was very involved within the Coralville community. He began volunteering as a fire fighter in 1952, even acting as the fire chief from 1969-1972. He was involved with multiple city committees in both Coralville and Iowa City, the Coralville Softball Association, the Boy Scouts, and various community service groups. He also owned his own business, the Slade Brothers Roofing Company, located in Coralville, Iowa.
Slade died suddenly on February 6, 1984 during a trip to Hawaii. Afterward, the Iowa City Area Chamber of Commerce created a community service award known as the Russell D. Slade Award, given to recognize citizens who give non-partisan leadership in order to continue the success of their local community.
