Description

A formal portrait of Edward and Elizabeth (Lucas) Demory. The photograph is matted, presented in an oval shape with a design around the edge. Edward is dressed a suit with a tie pin and what could be a medal pinned to his vest. Elizabeth wears a dress with a brooch decorated with a woman's face pinned to her high collar. A watch brooch is attached lower down. Taken in 1881, it is likely this photograph was taken on their wedding day.

Edward Demory was born about 1852 near Morse, Iowa. Sarah Elizabeth Lucas was born about 1862. They married in 1881 and had four daughters: Cora (b. 1881), Edna, Lillian, and Geneva (Lovetinsky et al., pg. 89; Ancestry Library).

When Cora was young, she developed bronchial asthma. Heeding the doctor's advise to move to warmer weather, Edward built a covered wagon and took the family south. After some time, they moved back to Iowa, first to Bell Plaine, and then to Coralville in the late 1890s. There, Edward worked as a house painter and for the Jacob Hotz Ice Company.

Edward died in 1937; Elizabeth followed him in death ten years later in 1947 (Lovetinsky et al., p. 98).
