Joanna (Smith) Fairchild was born to John and Anna Smith on November 12, 1840 in Dumfries, Scotland. In 1861, Joanna married Timothy Marsh Fairchild of Ontario, Canada. They had five children: Henry William (b. 1863), Mary Elvira (b. 1865), Timothy Marsh (b. 1867), John James (b. 1868), and Stephen Francis (b. 1870). The family moved in Johnson County in 1871, where they farmed and raised cattle.
During their final years, Joanna and husband Timothy lived in Coralville, Iowa. She died on May 3, 1908, and was returned to Canada for the burial (Ancestry Library; Lovetinsky et al., p. 100).
