Description
The family home of Arch and Nelle (Paintin) Hemphill, located at 203 Fifth Street. Arch and Nelle raised two children in this house: Robert Kimbal and Mary Elizabeth, who died at the age of twelve.
Arch W. Hemphill was born to Joseph Kimbal and Mary Ellen (Ward) Hemphill on January 25, 1875. Nelle Paintin was born to James Sr. and Mary B. (Dowman) Paintin on September 30, 1882. Arch and Nelle were married in 1902.
Arch worked at the Northwestern Bell Telephone Company, and Nelle was employed at Yetter's Department Store, both in Iowa City. They were members of the Coralville Methodist Church.
On January 17, 1948*, Arch died; Nelle passed away twenty years later in 1968 (Lovetinsky et al., p. 106, 120; Iowa City Press-Citizen, 1948; Iowa City Press-Citizen, 1968).
*Lest We Forget lists Arch Hemphill's death date as January 17, 1948, but his obituary was published in the Iowa City Press-Citizen two days earlier, on the 15th of January.
