May (Adair) and John Wineke sit together for a portrait. She wears a long-sleeved dress with embroidered tassels off the shoulders and tassel-shaped buttons. He wears a dark suit with a bolo tie, the top of which is decorated with the silhouette of a horse head. Their hands are entwined.
John Wineke was born on January 3, 1888 to John, Sr. and Josephine (Roegler) Wineke near West Branch, Iowa. May Adair was born on Auguest 13, 1889 to Charles and Kate (Kondora) Adair of Iowa City, Iowa. John and May were married on November 26, 1907. They had five children: Mable, Lillian, Ruth, Donald, and Arnold.
The family moved to Coralville in 1925. John worked as street maintenance for the city, and they both dressed poultry for local grocery stores, including Koser's Grocery.
John died on September 21, 1968; May followed him in death on January 19, 1979 (Ancestry Library; Lovetinsky et al., p. 130).
