Description

History of the Coralville Public Library

The desire for a library in Coralville prompted the fourteen members of Cadette Girl Scout Troop #55, under the direction of Frances Rogers, to sponsor a bake sale and bazaar for funds to start a library. Plans were made at the organizational meeting in September, 1964 to start collecting donated books and make gifts to sell at the bazaar which was held at the Village Pharmacy on December 12, 1964. The total proceeds of $46.78 were deposited in a "Library for Coralville" fund in the Coralville Bank and Trust Co.

Representatives of various civic groups organized to help get the library started. The committee included Frances Rogers, T. Patricia Dee, Faye Peters, Della Hartvigsen, E. Jean Schwab, Mrs. Donald Mohr, Charles Dinsmore, Virginia Wenman and City Councilman Robert Rogers serving as advisor.

An ordinance establishing a free public library for Coralville was passed at a special meeting by the Coralville City Council in April, 1965. The ordinance provided for the appointment of a seven-member Board of Trustees. Board members were appointed by the mayor, with the approval of the council: two to hold office for two years, two for four years, and three for six years. Subsequent appointments would be made for six years, except to fill vacancies.

Frances Rogers was elected President and T. Patricia Dee, Secretary. Other members of the board appointed by Mayor Clarence Wilson were: Faye Peters, Della Hartvigsen, Charles Dinsmore, Jack Bagford, and Allen Thomas. E. Jean Schwab was named Director.
