Description

In 1976, the library changed to the Gaylord Book Charging system for circulating library materials. This was much faster than the old system of asking the borrower to sign their name on the card of each item borrowed. It also protects the borrower's right to privacy in their choice of reading material since only a number appears on the charge card.

Building improvements consisting of remodeling the restrooms for handicapped accessibility, resurgacing the parking lot and major furnace repairs were made in 1979. In the early 1980's, insufficient parking, leaking roof problems, increasing building repairs and shortage of space caused the Board of Trustees to behing discussion of long-range planning and the possibility of using part of the Drive-In Theater site for future building. A Planning Process Committee was organized.

The house and property adjacent to the library on the west was purchased in 1983 as a possible site for a new building or additional space for adding to the present building. Neumann Monson, Architects, were hired to do a feasibility study on an addition to the existing facility. The study found it would not be advisable to add to the present building because of the cost to bring it up to desired standards. Mr. Neumann was directed to draw up a plan for a new building to be built on the present site.

On March 2, 1983, Board President Robert Rogers and Library Director Jean Schwab attended the Chamber of Commerce Awards dinner to accept the President's Award for Civic Leadership plaque which was presented to the library Board, Staff and Friends.
