Description

The library purchased a video disc player and received a $500 donation from the Friends of the Library toward purchase of discs. The library also purchased a television set and received free cable service.

The Library Board made trips to various libraries in the area gleaning ideas and many hours were spent in meetings planning for an attractive, functional building. A decision was made at the August 1, 1984 Board meeting to place the new library bond issue on the November, 1984 ballot. Amount of the bond issue was set by the City Council at $950,000, since they did not feel that the amount asked for by the Library Board ($1.2 million) had much chance of passing. However, on Election Day, local citizens passed the bond issue by 75%. A "Thank You for Voting Party" was held at the library on November 17, 1984.

Early in 1985, Mayor Kattchee approached the Library Board as to their feelings about changing the site of the new library to an area just eash of the Coralville Fire Station (a portion of the former Drive-In Theater property) which had just become available for purchase by the city. The library agreed and Neumann Monson Architects were directed to draw up a plan for the new site.

In June, 1985, a Children's Librarian was hired, bringing the total staff to six fulltime and two part-time employees. The Library had previously been closed on Friday to allow the staff to catch up on behind the scenes duties. With the hiring of the new staff person, Friday hours were again possible.
