Description

On June 1, 1989, the Library received its first accreditation certificate from the State Library of Iowa. This was achieved by meeting certain standards and performance measures set up by the State Library Standards Committee.

The Library Board of Trustees, with the help of City Council members and Architect Kevin Monson, began making plans for finishing the lower level. Plans for a large auditorium, restrooms and storage space were completed and let for bids in December, 1989. Bid opening date was January 4, 1990, with Pat Moore Construction Company submitting the low bid of $80,995. Construction started January 19, and the auditorium was completed in May.

With the completion of the auditorium, it became evident that more parking space was needed. Plans were drawn up to entend the existing lot. Bids were received July 19, and it was recommended that the low bid of Streb Construction, for the amount of $29,294, be accepted. Work on this project began in August, 1990.

With the efforts of a dedicated staff, supportive Library Board members, City Council members, many, many volunteers, and interested citizens, the Coralville community has a library of which they can be proud.
